30Under30 Honouree: Hiba Arshad

Great to hear from Significant Insights Global 30 under 30 honouree Hiba Arshad who is a dynamic Senior Analyst at Miix Analytics, blending a background in biology, a love for technology, and a passion for storytelling to uncover insights that drive impact.

So, how did you get into the industry, and take us through how you got to this point?

My journey began with a love for science, a fascination with understanding the intricacies of life, which led me to pursue a degree in Honours Biology at the University of Waterloo. But as I delved deeper, I discovered something unexpected—a spark for problem-solving through technology. Pairing my biology studies with a Minor in Computing opened up a whole new world.

I found myself coding late into the night, fascinated by how algorithms could unravel patterns in massive datasets. The transition wasn’t easy—moving from studying cells to writing scripts required persistence and a steep learning curve. But I loved the challenge, and with every project, I saw the potential to blend my curiosity for science with the analytical power of technology.

This passion led me to roles where I could explore the impact of data-driven decisions, from academic research to industry projects. Eventually, I joined Miix Analytics Inc., where my skills found a home. I started as a Technical Project Analyst, and within a year, I was leading projects as a Senior Analyst. This role allows me to weave together the analytical rigor of science, the creativity of storytelling, and the transformative potential of data—all in service of uncovering insights that truly matter.

Why should anyone consider a career in market research, data, and insights?
Data is the language of the future. A career in this field isn’t just about crunching numbers—it’s about finding meaning, telling stories, and influencing change. Whether you’re passionate about understanding consumer behavior, optimizing business strategies, or addressing global challenges, market research and insights offer an unparalleled platform to make an impact. It’s a field where your curiosity is your greatest asset and where every discovery can inspire action.

Career paths are rarely without challenges. Can you share an honest moment from your career when things didn’t go quite according to plan, but the lessons remain with you to this day?
Early in my career, I worked on a project that required integrating data from multiple, inconsistent sources. I underestimated the complexity and struggled to meet deadlines. It was a humbling moment—one where I learned the importance of preparation, attention to detail, and asking for help. It also taught me resilience: that failure isn’t the end but an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow. That experience shaped my approach to problem-solving and teamwork, and I carry those lessons with me every day.

What two things should junior researchers focus on as they progress in their careers?

  1. Curiosity: Never stop asking questions. The most groundbreaking insights often come from challenging assumptions and digging deeper.
  2. Storytelling: Data on its own is just numbers. Learn to craft compelling narratives around your findings—ones that inspire action and resonate with people.

Do you have any advice for our sector?
Let’s never lose sight of the human side of what we do. Data tells us what’s happening, but it’s our responsibility to understand why and how it impacts real people. We need to continue fostering diversity—not just in our teams but in the perspectives and voices we amplify. By doing so, we’ll ensure that our insights aren’t just accurate but meaningful and inclusive.

And do you have anyone who has helped your career so far that you’d like to acknowledge and say thanks or give a shoutout to?
I’m deeply grateful to Hilary Borndahl at Miix Analytics for her mentorship and encouragement. She’s been instrumental in guiding my growth, pushing me to take on challenges that felt beyond my reach, and inspiring me with her vision for data’s role in transforming industries.
